Missing Fisherman Located Safe After Overnight Search Near Greenland Pond in the Town of Dresden

According to Sheriff Jeffrey J. Murphy, the Washington County Sheriff's Office was called for a missing person report at approximately 12:11 a.m. on Sunday, August 17, 2026. which turned into a large-scale search and rescue operation in the Town of Dresden.

The subject, a 34-year-old male from Queensbury, New York, had been fishing with two companions in the area when he became separated from the group. He was last seen headed in the direction of Greenland Pond. A large coordinated multi-agency response was immediately initiated due to the nature of the terrain. Greenland Pond is situated in a remote and heavily wooded area in the vicinity of Sleeping Beauty Mountain and Black Mountain, accessible via South Bay Road near Pike Brook Road. The pond is reached only by a challenging trail through difficult backcountry terrain, presenting significant search challenges for responding personnel.

Responding agencies included the Washington County Sheriff's Office and their K9 teams, the Washington County Department of Public Safety, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers, the North Queensbury Fire Department, the Essex County Sheriff's Office (K9 unit), the Ticonderoga Police Department (K9 unit), Dresden Fire Department, the New York State Police, and the Warren County Sheriff's Office. Emergency medical services from Granville EMS remained on standby throughout the operation. New York State Police Aviation was also standing by and prepared to assist once weather conditions permitted.

At approximately 11:00 a.m. on August 17, 2026, the subject was located in good health after walking out of the wooded area on his own. He was evaluated at the scene by EMS as a precaution for generalized exhaustion and dehydration. No further medical transport was required.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office thanks all responding agencies and personnel for their swift response and coordinated efforts throughout this operation.
